Community Service for English Majors

Category: Community of English Practice, Fun, General — melissa.messer @ 2:07 pm

Anne Grubbs, the Enrichment and Volunteer Coordinator at Community Education of Warren County, is in contact with the English Club and is providing community outreach opportunities geared toward English majors. She currently coordinates after-school programs wherein volunteers may help children with homework, reading and practicing English as a second language. Ms. Grubbs would like to send groups of three to five volunteers to the after-school programs. There are also adult literacy projects and book drives for which Community Education needs volunteers.

Community service, while always enriching, is especially fun when volunteers get to work with their talents. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community and work for a service project that is particularly interesting and relevant to English majors.

The English Club meets every Tuesday afternoon at 4:30. If you would like a volunteer application, please stop by at this time or email me at melissa.messer@wku.edu. For more information on Community Education or to contact Anne Grubbs you can visit the website at http://www.bgwc-commed.org or call her at 270-842-4281.

WKU Career Expo: Thursday, October 19, 2006

Category: Careers — angela.jones @ 6:19 pm

As some of you already know, Thursday, October 19, is the fall edition of the WKU Career Expo. This event will be held from 1–4 p.m. at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center (at South Campus). I encourage all of you interested in internships or permanent jobs to check out the Career Services Center website to preview the organizations participating and then come to the expo prepared to schmooze!

Here’s the official information, from an email from Lana Riley of the Career Services Center: “Career Services Center is requesting your help in encouraging students to attend the upcoming Career Expo, a university wide career exploration and job search event. The Expo provides an opportunity for all current students (and alumni) to meet representatives from a wide variety of business, industry, government and social service agencies to discuss career and employment opportunities, including internships. Over 100 organizations are expected to attend, providing a great networking environment for students.”

Edited to add specific tips from Becky Bennett, director. Students attending the Career Expo should

  • Bring their WKU ID card for speedy check in.
  • Bring copies of their resume
  • Professional dress makes an important impression and employers always comment on attendees’ attire. Minimal attire would be dress slacks, shirt and tie or sweater for men; dress slacks or skirt, blouse or sweater for women. Business suits are always appropriate. (Please no jeans, shorts, t shirts or sweatshirts.) Here is a link to a Getting Ready for the Job Fair brochure which covers many topics including appropriate attire. http://www.wku.edu/CareerServ/fliers/jobfair.pdf
