About Me: Andria Nealis-The Day I Ended

Usually it’s Andria Nealis, Creative Writing Major, from Campbellsville, favorite color is mint green. But I’m tired of that. From now on I’m going to introduce myself and Andria Nealis: I ended.

The day I ended, piece by piece my past is piled on me. These shoes were my favorite color, this paper thin dress the last time I will be seen as complete, this makeup coated to cover up all my imperfections from losing my autonomy. I gazed into the hand-held mirror given to me one last time, before heading out into the unknown. A gentle knock interrupted my reverie, “Are you ready?”

As I squeezed tighter the arm encircling mine, I am escorted down the receiving hallway. Barely holding myself up, I saw the faces of those who have influenced my life over the years. There is my first boss, who taught me that a good attitude will get you far. There is my next door neighbor, so glad she could make it. My brother and his newly wedded wife are leaned around my favorite aunt to wave as I pass into the void. My baby brothers were sitting to the side, playing with their toys, and not understanding what is really happening to their sister. My Dad couldn’t take his eyes off me, not able to understand why I have to be taken away from him so young. My mother hugged me as her last good bye to her only daughter.

Tears started to fill my vision as I realize this is it. This was the end. I was not going to survive this day as I am. I took my place on the stage in front of all my closest friends and family to see the one who has come for me. I stared at his eyes, knowing that soon “I” will be no more. Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and whisper, “I do”.

The day I ended was my wedding day. I no longer think about myself as one person, but as two: my husband and myself. We share a bond that influences my life and choices each and every day. So I am no longer just Andria Nealis, Creative Writing Major, from Campbellsville, who’s favorite color is mint green. I am Chris Nealis’ wife: Andria, a Creative Writing Major, from Campbellsvile, and my favorite color is mint green.

    Hi, Andi,

When I read your title, I immediately thought of a Nine Inch Nails song titled “The Day the Whole World Went Away,” which you should check out sometime if you’re not familiar with it.

I love your comparison of being a bride on her wedding day to losing one’s identity. But you wrap it up beautifully with the idea that you didn’t actually lose anything; you gained a new life/identity through marrying the man you love. Very cool.

I would like to make one suggestion: I wanna see a picture of you from that day in your mint green dress! Adding one at the conclusion would be awesome! 🙂

    Hi Ann,

I added the photo, per your request. I hope you like it. It is my favorite from my wedding day.
